Lantus SoloStar is a synthetic version of a hormone naturally produced in the body. It functions by reducing blood glucose (sugar) levels. Lantus SoloStar is a long-acting insulin, distinct from other non-synthetic types of insulin.
Lantus SoloStar is prescribed for the management of type 1 (insulin-dependent) or type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. Additionally, it may be used for other indications not included in this medication guide.
Lantus SoloStar is just one component of a comprehensive treatment plan that may also encompass diet, exercise, weight management, foot care, eye care, dental hygiene, and monitoring your blood sugar levels. Adhere closely to your diet, medications, and exercise routines, as changes to any of these aspects can influence your blood sugar.
Be cautious to avoid hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This can happen if you miss a meal, engage in prolonged exercise, consume alcohol, or experience stress. Symptoms include headaches, hunger, weakness, sweating, shaking, irritability, or difficulty concentrating. It’s advisable to carry hard candy or glucose tablets in case you experience low blood sugar.
Avoid using Lantus SoloStar if you are allergic to insulin glargine. To ensure the safe use of Lantus, inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney issues. Classified as FDA pregnancy category C, it is uncertain whether Lantus SoloStar poses risks to an unborn child. Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while undergoing treatment. It is also unclear if insulin glargine is excreted in breast milk or if it could affect a breastfeeding infant. Do not use Lantus SoloStar without consulting your doctor if you are nursing.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not compensate for a missed dose by taking an extra amount of Lantus SoloStar. You should not take more than one dose within a 24-hour period unless advised by your doctor.
Always have Lantus SoloStar readily available. Ensure your prescription is refilled before you run out completely.
If you suspect an overdose of this medication, seek emergency medical assistance immediately, as an insulin overdose can lead to life-threatening hypoglycemia.
